The Event is the container which includes the Direct Impact of your study. Every Activity must have an associated Event(s) describing how the Activity will affect the local Study Area economy. Events are defined by the Sector they affect and their value.
Once an Activity is created, the New Event button activates in the Events window.
Since Event properties depend upon Activity Type; each Activity Type will generate a different set of Event Properties. The most common Activity Type is Industry Change - this is used when modeling a production change. Select an Activity Type below for more information.
INDUSTRY CHANGE:
The Industry Change Event field lists Industry Sales as the value. The initial Sector listed is the first Sector numerically available in the selected Study Area. For Washington County, MN, this is Sector 1 Oilseed Farming. Our most recent Sectoring Scheme, 2013 data, has 536 Sectors.
If the only field that displays is Industry Sales, select Event Options > Show > Show All.
When an Industry Sector is not available in the Study Area, the Sector Missing Error is generated.
Because there is no local Industry information related to this Sector in the Study Area, IMPLAN has no Relationships from which to project impacts. There are two options to model a new industry in IMPLAN:
- In the IMPLAN Software, Customize menu > Study Area Data will allow you to build your custom Industry from the available information.
- A proxy Industry may be created using the Analysis-by-Parts technique. Note: It is inadvisable to use Sectors that do not exist in the model unless you are working with one of these techniques or
working with margins.
To enter an Industry Sales value, tab over or place the cursor in the Industry Sales field and type in a value. Negative values appear in parentheses.
Retail changes are specialized Industry events. The Retail Sectors (320-330) are Sectors where groups of otherwise unrelated Industries' final demand are combined and sold collectively to end users (e.g. a grocer sells tree nuts, melons, poultry, meat, grains, nursery plants, health and beauty products, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals etc. but does not produce any of these products.) Values for these Sectors can be reported in two manners: Gross Retail Sales or Gross Retail Margin.
When a value is entered into an Industry Sales field associated to a Retail Sector, the following screen is prompted:
To determine which selection appropriately describes the entered value, decide whether the sales value being entered is in Purchaser Prices or Producer Prices.
Gross Retail Sales: applies margins to the entered sales value. Since most retail sales are reported as Gross Retail Sales (Purchaser Prices) this is the default selection. The margined value will not appear in the Industry Sales field; however, it can be viewed using the Preview option in the Setup Activities screen:
or selecting the Edit Margin option in the Setup Activities screen:
Gross Retail Margin: Select this if sales values are in Producer Prices; the full sales value is applied to the Retail Industry Sector.
Select OK when you are finished.
Note: This screen will not appear if an Employment value is entered in a Retail Sector. This is because the value calculated by IMPLAN for Industry Sales, based on the entered employment value, will be a margined value.
COMMODITY CHANGE:
The initial Sector will be Sector 3001 Oilseed Farming. Right clicking on the Sector field to access the Sector Lookup button is the most efficient way to find the correct Commodity Sector if the user does not know the Sector ID.
Commodity Value is entered by highlighting the field and typing in the value for the change you are modeling.
LABOR INCOME CHANGE:
The Labor Income Change Event has Labor Income Value as its input field. There are only two Sectors for Labor Income changes: 5001 Employee Compensation and 6001 Proprietor Income.
To enter a Labor Income Value, tab over or place the cursor in the field.
HOUSEHOLD SPENDING CHANGE:
Household Spending is the Households value field. Households are divided into 9 categories ranging in Household combined incomes from less than 10K to 150K+. These are quickly accessed with the drop down menu.
To enter a Household Expenditures value, highlight the field and type in the value.
INDUSTRY SPENDING PATTERN:
Create custom Industry Spending Patterns. Commodity Sectors are selected for these Events. All values must be coefficients and are entered by selecting the field and typing in the value of the Sector's contribution to the overall spending pattern (expenditure for Commodity/total expenditures on Commodities).
In order to properly create the pattern, coefficient values must add up to a total value between 0 and 1. (In most instances the Industry Spending Pattern < 1 because these patterns do not consider Labor Income and profits - these are modeled separately).
The sum of the coefficients is listed as the Sum of Event Values (this field updates with each value that is entered) located at the bottom of the Setup Activities screen.
If values in the spending pattern exceed 100% (1.00), the Data Error screen appears.
The Event that caused the coefficient value to exceed 1.00 is marked with a red exclamation point.
Note: IMPLAN includes pre-made Industry Spending Patterns. Models can be created with these predefined Event and coefficient patterns by importing them from the Industry Spending Patterns or From Another Model. Coefficient values in imported spending patterns may be changed.
INSTITUTIONAL SPENDING PATTERNS:
Create custom Institutional Spending Patterns. Commodity Sectors are selected to represent Events for these Event Sectors.
Coefficients are entered by selecting the field and typing in the value of the appropriate Sector's contribution to the overall spending pattern (expenditure for Commodity/total expenditures on Commodities). In order to properly create the pattern, the coefficient values must add up to 1, accounting for 100% of the institutions spending.
The sum of the coefficients is listed as the Sum of Event Values (this field updates with each value that is entered) located at the bottom of the Setup Activities screen.
If values in the spending pattern exceed 100% (1.00), the Data Error screen appears.
Note: IMPLAN includes pre-defined Institutional Spending Patterns. Models may be created with these predefined Event and Coefficient patterns by importing them from the Institutional Spending Patterns or From Another Model. Coefficient values in imported spending patterns may be changed.
If you mis-enter the coefficient value, the following error is generated.
