EMPLOYMENT & WAGES BY NAICS (IMPUTED CEW DATA) DASHBOARD
This Dashboard includes 2 tiles:
- Ownership is a column chart stacking the filtered Metric (by default Employment) categorized by Ownership (Federal Government, State Government, Local Government, or Private) over Data Years for the Filtered Region (by default the United States).
- Imputed CEW Table is a table chart showing the filter Metric (by default Employment) by NAICS (by default at the 2-digit NAICS level).
When viewing a Dashboard, use the filters to change the data points displayed. Filter options include:
- Dollar Type: by default dollars are displayed in Real dollars, see Dollar Year.
- Data Year: no default set, both tiles show all Data Years available.
- Dollar Year: by default dollars are shown in current year dollars.
- Region Type: United States by default.
- NAICS Level: 2 Digit NAICS by default.
- Disclosure: no default set, by default disclosed and undisclosed (IMPLAN estimated) data are included.
- Ownership: no default set, the Ownership chart displays ownership, and the Imputed CEW Table displays data for all types of ownership by default.
- State: no default set. To filter by State, update Region Type to State.
- County: no default set. To filter by County update Region Type to County.
- Metric: by default Employment.
The gear in the upper right provides more options such as downloading the Dashboard to a PDF. On each tile, click the Table Menu (a series of three vertical dots that appears in the upper right of a tile when hovering over it with your cursor) for the option to download the data within that tile. Choose “Explore from here” within the Table Menu to access more data query options. Exploring from the Dashboard allows you to dig into the data starting from the settings within the Dashboard tile.
EXPLORING EMPLOYMENT & WAGES BY NAICS (IMPUTED CEW DATA)
Explore the Employment & Wages by NAICS Data by choosing Employment & Wages by NAICS Data from the Explore dropdown menu, or by choosing “Explore from here” from a Employment & Wages by NAICS Data Dashboard Tile or Look.
By default in Explore > Employment & Wages by NAICS Data, the Dollar Type is Real, the Dollar Year is the current year, and the Data Year is the most recent Data Year. With this setting, all dollar values included in a data query will be adjusted for inflation and displayed in current year dollars. It is recommended to always either filter or pivot on Data Year. Otherwise, data measures will be summed over Data Years. Region Type is by default United States, and NAICS Level is by default at the 2 Digit level. NAICS Dimensions will be available for each 2 Digit NAICS, and data queries will include data for the United States with these settings.
EXPLORE: FILTER-ONLY FIELDS
Dollar Type
When Dollar Type is Real, Nominal dollar values are adjusted for inflation/deflation such that each dollar value Measures will be displayed in the selected Dollar Year(s). Dollar Year only applies when Dollar Type is Real.
When Dollar Type is Nominal, dollar value Measures will be unadjusted, therefore they will be displayed in the same Dollar Year as the Data Year.
Field Picker
The Field Picker allows you to pick any one of the Measures from the filter dropdown menu. The Measure titled “Metric” to do so is tied to the Field Picker. Select, filter, and/or pivot on this measure in order to include in data query.
Region Type
Region Type allows you to select the Region level at which you’d like to view the data (United States, State, or County). Region Type is set to United States by default. To filter by State, update Region Type to State. To filter by County update Region Type to County. In this data set, the total of counties within a state are not controlled to equal the state value, and the total of all states is not controlled to equal the United States value, therefore the total of all states, the total of all counties, and the United States value for a given Measure are inconsistent.
EXPLORE: NOTE ON FILTERING REGIONS
Filtering on a Region within the Employment & Wages by NAICS Explore can get a little weird. Essentially, you need to select the geographic level that you wish to see results for within the default filter “Region Type.” Let’s say for example, that you want to see results for all 50 states and DC; to do this simply add State as a Dimension, select State as the Region Type, select whichever Measure you would like, and then update. In this scenario, you would see results for each State broken out as rows. If you wish to filter for a given State, you can select State as a filter and filter on the State you want to see. After pressing Run you should only see one row for the state that you filtered on.
Due to the nature of how this data is structured, it is not possible to filter and/or include two different Region Types within a query in the standard way. This can get murky when you are attempting to see results by County, for a Filtered State, which is a common thing to do for all Explores in Data Library. Let’s say that I want to see Employment counts for all counties in California. In other Explores, you could add County as a Dimension, State as a filter, and Employment as a measure. Simply filter on the State of California, and you would get results for each County as a row. In the screenshot below, we can see that after hitting run, we actually get a Data Window that gives us essentially no results:
Even though we selected County as the Region Type, we still got no results because we filtered on a State. Again, this is because of how data is structured within this Explore, where the State Dimension is not tied to the County Dimension. To successfully see Employment for each County in California, there is a necessary workaround. We would actually need to add County as a filter and remove State. Then, within the filter window, change the qualifying field dropdown for County, that by default is “is equal to” to “contains” from the dropdown. After doing this, we then input “California” into the County filter to only return results for County names that contain California.
After pressing run, in the data window we see Employment by County for the State of California only:
EXPLORE: DIMENSIONS
Select a Dimension to include as a column with all Dimension possibilities. Filter a Dimension to specify which Dimension possibilities appear in the data query. Pivot a Dimension to transpose the Dimension rows into columns.
