Environmental Data Dashboard & Explore

ENVIRONMENTAL DASHBOARD

This Dashboard includes 3 tiles:  

• “Year over Year” is a line chart showing the Environmental Unit Values of the filtered Satellite Account over Data Years for the filter Region(s).  
• “County View” is a map chart of Environment Unit Values of the filtered Satellite Account by Five Digit Fips (this is the county code Looker uses to map the data). 
• “Environmental” is a table chart of the Environmental Unit Values of the filtered Satellite Account and the total Output by Industry for the filtered Region(s).

 

When viewing a Dashboard, use the filters to change the data points displayed. Filter options include: 

• Data Year: most recent Data Year by default in County View and Commodity Table tiles. All available Data Years are displayed in the Year over Year tile (filter does not apply to this tile).
• Note, Environmental Unit Value data is produced by applying the environmental units per Output ratios to each Data Year of Industry Output data. Learn more from the Data Team. 
• State: by default Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina
• County: no county filter is set by default
• Aggregation: Aggregation level of Industries by default is the unaggregated 546 scheme
• Industry; no industry filter is set by default
• Satellite Account: by default Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
• Category: no category filter is set by default
• Tag: no tag filter is set by default

The gear in the upper right provides more options such as downloading the Dashboard to a PDF.  On each tile, click the Table Menu (a series of three vertical dots that appears in the upper right of a tile when hovering over it with your cursor) for the option to download the data within that tile. Choose “Explore from here” within the Table Menu to access more data query options. Exploring from the Dashboard allows you to dig into the data starting from the settings within the Dashboard tile. 

 

Environment Satellite, Category, and Tag 

There are eight satellite accounts. The satellite accounts define the major groups of environmental indicators (i.e. Greenhouse Gases). Each satellite account has a number of more-detailed “tags'' that represent more specific types of the environmental factors (i.e. CO2). The broadest grouping of environmental indicators is category. The four environmental categories include air, resource, soil, and water. 

Satellite accounts and the categories they fall into are listed below. Details about the Environmental data such as examples of satellite account tags can be found in the related Environmental data article from the Data Team.

2. Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Air)
3. Land Use (Resource)
4. Mineral Use (Resource)
5. Nitrogen and Phosphorus Release to Water (Water)  
6. Pesticide Emissions (Air, Soil & Water)
7. Toxic Chemical Releases (Air, Soil & Water)
8. Water Use (Water & Resource)

 

EXPLORING ENVIRONMENT DATA 

Explore the Environmental Data by choosing Environmental  from the Explore dropdown menu, or by choosing “Explore from here” from an Environmental  Data Dashboard Tile or Look. 

By default in Explore > Environmental Data, a filter is set for the most recent Data Year. It is recommended to always either filter or pivot on Data Year. Otherwise, data measures will be summed over Data Years. The default Aggregation Scheme Param is 546 Unaggregated. Industry Dimensions will be available in the 546 Industry scheme with this setting.

 

EXPLORE: FILTER-ONLY FIELDS

Aggregation Scheme Param

The aggregation filter provides the option to view data by Industry at one of the following levels of granularity:

• 546 Unaggregated: most granular. Data is available for each IMPLAN Industry according to the most recent 546 Industry Scheme. 
• IMPLAN 2 Digit NAICS 546: Data is aggregated for Industries corresponding to each 2 Digit NAICS.
• IMPLAN 3 Digit NAICS 546: Data is aggregated for Industries corresponding to each 3 Digit NAICS.

EXPLORE: DIMENSIONS

Select a Dimension to include as a column with all Dimension possibilities. Filter a Dimension to specify which Dimension possibilities appear in the data query. Pivot a Dimension to transpose the Dimension rows into columns. 

 

Dimensions	Details
County	All U.S. counties are possible Dimensions.  When states are selected in the State filter, only counties within the filtered states will appear in the county filter or in the data query when selected.
Data Year	All IMPLAN Data Years are possible Dimensions.
Environment Category	The following are possible Dimensions: Air Resource Soil Water
Environment Name	All detailed Environment Names are possible Dimensions. (Offers more detailed breakdown of Environment Satellites)
Environment Satellite	The following are possible Dimensions: Criteria Pollutants Greenhouse Gas Emissions  Land Use  Mineral Use  Nitrogen and Phosphorus Release to Water  Pesticide Emissions  Toxic Chemical Releases  Water Use
Environment Tag	All Environment Tags are possible Dimensions. (Offers more detailed breakdown of Environment Satellites)
Environment Unit	The following are possible Dimensions: Kg m2*a m3 All unit values are measures of mass in kilograms (kg) except for Land Use unit values and Water Use unit values. Land Use measures area in square meters per year (m2*a), and Water Use measures volume in cubic meters (m3).
Five Digit Fips	A Five Digit Fips is a county code. The first two digits indicate the state and the following three digits indicate the county. All U.S. Five Digit Fips codes are possible Dimensions.  This Dimension is used to map the data in the County View Map Chart found on the Dashboard. Industry	All 546 IMPLAN Industries are possible Dimensions. This Dimension lists Industries as the Industry Code (number) hyphen Industry Description (name).
Industry Code	All 546 IMPLAN Industry Codes (numbers) are possible Dimensions.
Industry Description	All 546 IMPLAN Industry Descriptions (names) are possible Dimensions.
Region	All 50 States plus the District of Columbia are possible Dimensions.  Pivoting or selecting Region will display filtered states when filtering on state and will display filtered counties when filtering on county.
State	All 50 States plus the District of Columbia are possible Dimensions.

 

EXPLORE: MEASURES

Measures are displayed based on Dimension settings. Select a Measure to include as a column in the data query. 

 

Measures	Details
Nominal Output	Total Industry Output in nominal, unadjusted dollars (Dollar Year = Data Year)
Unit Value	Environment Unit Value (i.e. 1,000,000 kg of Greenhouse Gases)
Value per $ Output	Ratio of physical environment unit value per dollar of Output Output times Value per Output produces the Unit Value Measure (Some industries will be missing a Value per $ Output in each satellite)
