2021 Canada Occupation Data Release Notes (235 Industry)

** Note: Data on hours worked throughout the Canada Occupation Dashboards released on 2/25/2026 have been revised due to a change in process. Revised hours worked values reflect this change as of 3/16/2026. **

OCCUPATION CLASSIFICATION

The Canada Occupation data that correspond to the 235 Industry scheme use the National Occupational Classification (NOC) 2021 Version 1.0.  The full structure includes Broad (10: 1-digit), Major (45: 2-digit), SubMajor (89: 3-digit), Minor (162: 4-digit), and UnitGroup (516: 5-digit), for a total of 822 unique occupations.

OCCUPATION BY INDUSTRY MATRIX

The Census of Population is the data source for the matrix of occupation and industry data. It is released every 5 years. The 235 Industry Canada Occupation data use the 2021 Census of Population data. The data come from a custom-tabulated dataset from Statistics Canada that provides national-level data on the count of respondents with wages, salaries, and commissions by industry (classified by up to 4-digit 2017 NAICS codes) and occupation (classified by 5-digit NOC 2021 codes).

CORE COMPETENCY CLASSIFICATION

Core competency data come from the Employment and Social Development Canada and Statsitics Canada OaSIS Database 2023 Version 1.0. The OaSIS database expands the 516 NOC 2021 5-digit Unit Groups to more than 900 7-digit occupational profiles. The 7-digit occupational profiles are built upon the NOC classification, where the first five digits correspond to the NOC 2021 Unit Group and the last two digits reflect additional information provided as part of the OaSIS profile. IMPLAN derives core competency data for each occupation by aggregating the more detailed occupational profiles to the 5-digit Unit Group NOC 2021 level.

HOURS WORKED

IMPLAN uses two data sources for estimation of hours worked by industry and occupation. Data come from Statistics Canada’s Provincial and Territorial Economic Accounts (PTEA) and Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey (LFS). IMPLAN uses the PTEA data as the foundation for hours worked but incorporates occupational detail from LFS by calculating and applying an occupational adjustment factor.
