Industry Clustering & Targeting
I'd be interested in examples of how IMPLAN has been used to define/describe regional industry clusters, and/or prioritize industry targets. Thanks.

The 1996 proceedings have a paper on cluster analysis: http://implan.com/V4/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=139&Itemid=7 Also if you type "cluster" in the search box off the home page, there are 4 papers (but I don't think these are what you want). Most useful might be to look at the regional commodity summary report (under Explore>Social Accounts) and note where Net Commodity Supply greatly exceeds Total Gross Commodity Demand (regional advantage) and where Total Gross Commodity Demand greatly exceeds Net Commodity Supply (opportunity for import substitution). Note, these only work as starting points -eg, if your region can't extract oil, there is not much you can do about it.0

Thanks Doug. You're right, site search was not too productive. Do you recall which report in the 1996 proceeding dealt with clusters? I did a cursory word search and nothing came up. Agree with the regional commodity summary report as the initial approach.0

The 1996 Proceedings on the website do not seem to be complete. Send me an e-mail (doug@implan.com) and I will attach a complete set. I will also have Ambrose update the version on the web when he gets in. It is the paper by Tom Johnson "Industry Targeting".0
