Academic R & D Jobs & Emp Comp

Hi: I would like to estimate the number of jobs supported by academic R&D in my state. Eventually I would like to find the indirect and induced impact of the jobs and employee compensation directly supported by this activity. We have data on expenditures for R&D taking place at academic institutions sited within the state. We also have IMPLAN III, 3.0.9.2. My guess is that I should start the analysis with a newly created/adapted industry that has a production function resembling that of 376 (scientific research and development services), but which has employee compensation per job resembling that of 392 (private junior colleges, colleges, universities and professional schools). I can create such an industry by taking a default version of 376 and customizing that industry. Does that approach make sense for starters? Thank you.
