Hello, Can you please explain how the top ten sectors (whether by employment or labor income or output) is derived using just an input in one sector? Also, where can I get multipliers to that? Thanks!

  • Hi, The Top Ten Industries in the Model Overview are generated by determining which industries see the greatest impact as the result of a change in production in the primary (impacted) Sector. This is derived by means of the spending patterns, Value Added ratios and RPC’s. IMPLAN knows, based on BEA data, what each Sector requires for its production and how much of these products are available locally. Since this is known for all 440 Sectors included in each data set, the final results (as seen by viewing the detail results tab) reflects the total amount spent through all local rounds of Indirect spending until this spending leaks from the Model region. Additionally, IMPLAN has ratios for compensation and Proprietor Income which generate the rounds of Induced spending in a similar fashion to the Indirect. The totals spent in each Sector as the result of an impact are summed into the Totals column, and a sort of the Detailed Results Total column for a View By: Employment will show the same top ten Sectors as the Top Ten display. The Multipliers for this are found in the Detail Multiplier spreadsheet under Explore> Multipliers. Let us know if you have more questions.
