I am doing an analysis using IMPLAN Sector 14 for South Carolina and am finding very low labor income/employment ratios (which I am using as a proxy for per capita income for the jobs created from the scenarios I'm running). For example, running a scenario with a $500,000 industry change yields $695,093 in total output, $124,068 in total labor income, and 20.9 total jobs. This gives a per capita annual wage rate of $5,936. This doesn't seem right... Can you provide any insight as to my error, or if there is no error, what's the easiest way to see the explanation as to why this is so much lower than most other SC industries? I've never seen an industry with anything nearly this low. Thank you!

  • Hello Jimmy, Agricultural Sectors can often times have low Labor Income/Worker ratios due to the fact that there are a lot of proprietorships in agriculture, many of which are not money-makers. This tends to especially be the case with Sector 14, which includes horses and such, and will thus include a lot of hobby farms. The U.S. Labor Income/Worker for sector 14 in 2011 is just $10,692. If you happen to know that you specific industry has a higher Labor Income/Worker, you can certainly overwrite the IMPLAN estimations. To do this you simply tab or place the cursor into the Employment and the Employment Compensation fields and enter your known values. One other consideration relative to the Employment value: a job in IMPLAN = the annual average of monthly jobs in that industry (this is the same definition used by QCEW, BLS, and BEA nationally). A job can be either full-time or part-time. Please let us know if you have any additional questions,
