I want to estimate the regional / statewide impact of a university, and have data on: wages/benefits; grants and other receipts; revenue from athletic and cultural events; enrollment. How do I introduce these elements into the model? Can they be analyzed as 1 scenario with 4 different activities; or should each impact be seen separately?

  • Hello Dr. Guha. We have attached a case study providing some guidance on how to conduct an impact study of a college or university. The link to the case study on the IMPLAN Website is shown below. https://implan.com/index.php?option=com_multicategories&view=article&id=670:670&Itemid=71 Please review this document and let us know if we can be of further assistance.

  • Thanks for the tutorial. I "imported" the institutional spending pattern and ran the model with an activity level (total budget) of $249 million. The model shows a direct impact of $236 million. Why is this $13 million less than the input level? Should the direct not be the same as the input? Please advise how to fix this. Best regards.

  • Hello Dr. Guha. Your assumption is on the addition is correct. The direct should equal as the input value. There are a couple of possible reasons for this. First, if you applied deflators (i.e. 2011 data with Event Year of 2011 and Dollar Year for View of 2011). If you did apply deflators, then you will need to change your Dollar Year for View to the appropriate year to view results. Secondly, without knowing how you set up the institutional spending model, it is very likely that some of your direct effect leaked out of your Study Region. To see if any of the direct effect leaked from the region, there are two cells on the left side of the “Scenario Results” screen that will help. If either Direct Institution or LPP Imports fields have a value in them, then this value plus the value of the direct effect shown in your “Summary Results” section should total to your initial direct effect. The Direct Institution field indicates how much of the direct effect is purchased from other governmental entities in the Study Region. The LPP imports field tell you how much of the direct effect is spent with merchants located outside of your Study Region. Because the model does not know how these values will be spent, they are set-aside and not re-spent in the model.
