Implan Total Labor vs BLS Labor Statistics

The Total Employment number contained in the Model Information Panel of the Model Overview Screen for Guam is listed as 26,700. However, BLS data shows that in recent years total employment on Guam to be over 50,000 including the year 2009 which is the year for the Guam data set used for IMPLAN. Would you please explain this difference?

  • Hi John, Great question. We used County Business Patterns for Industry wage and salary Employment, Ag Census for farm wage and salary and Proprietors(number of farms) for non-subsistence farms and DOD information for military Employment which are specific to Guam. Government Employment data comes from BLS QCEW ratios from Virgin Islands used as a proxy. We have seen the higher occupational counts for Guam on the BLS website but not data which shows Employment by industry so that we have a way to bridge it to the Sectoring scheme. If you have access to that data and could send us a link or some information about where we might be able to find it would appreciate it. We are always striving to improve our data and data creation processes. Thanks!
