Non-housing expenditures for Orangeburg County

I am the Assessment and Testing Coordinator of Claflin University. We bought the IMPLAN software at the end of last year from you. Now we are working on Economic Impact of Claflin University and we need to get some authentic data for Orangeburg County. Could you please help us providing those information’s? To calculate Economic Impact, we need to get the data for the following fields: 1 % Non-housing expenditures for Orangeburg County (est). 2 % Of residents' expenditures in-county (est.) 3 % County residents who rent 4 Average annual county rent Thank you so much in advance for your time and support.

  • Hi Iris. We have referred you post to our Data experts. We are not certain if IMPLAN has the data you requested in that format. In the mean time, we would suggest that go to the Census of Population and Housing for your state and county. The Census Bureau collects a lot of information on housing statistics by county and state in the U.S. As soon as we have a reply from our Data experts, we will provide it to you.

  • Hi Iris, Thank you for your post. In general, you can estimate the first two values using data in your IMPLAN package, but the second two would require the use of external data. 1. % Non-housing expenditures for Orangeburg County (est). You can see each household income group's local expenditures by going to Explore > Social Accounts > Social Account Reports tab > View By: Household Demand. Typically, we think of housing expenses as including commodities 3360 and 3361. However, this report shows local expenditures only - so the Total row in this report does not represent total spending on commodities. To calculate total spending on commodities, you have to add in domestic imports and foreign imports, both of which can be found by going to Explore > Social Accounts > IxC Social Accounting Matrix and noting each household column's payments to the Domestic Trade row and Foreign Trade row. Assuming you are wanting to know non-housing expenditures as a proportion of household spending on all goods and services, first subtract the expenditures on 3360 and 3361 (found in the first report mentioned above) from the total spending on all goods and services you just calculated. Divide this remainder by that same total spending on all goods and services. This is the proportion of non-housing spending on all goods and services. If, instead of wanting a proportion of spending that is non-housing, you want a proportion of all household outlays (i.e., including payments to savings and taxes) that is non-housing, you would use the household row's total from the IxC SAM from which to subtract the payments to 3360 and 3361 and by which to divide the remainder. To get a weighted average for all household income classes, you can weight each household income class' figure by total spending by each household income class. 2. % Of residents' expenditures in-county (est.) A simple way to do this is to divide the total local spending (from this Explore > Social Accounts > Social Account Reports tab > View By: Household Demand) by the grand total spending you calculated above by adding in domestic and foreign imports. However, note that this method will give you a lower than expected "% local" because it includes the manufactured goods in the average which would skew it downward since very little is often manufactured in a county. You are probably more interested in knowing the proportion of spending on services (banking, restaurants, car repair, gyms, salons, entertainment, etc.) and in retail stores (gas stations, grocery stores, bookstores, etc.) is local. I.e., you don't care whether the shoes are manufactured locally, but rather whether households bought their shoes at the local shoe store. If this is correct, then the best way would be to calculate an average RPC for commodities 3320 and above. RPCs can be found by going to Explore > Social Accounts > Social Account Reports tab > View By: Commodity Summary. You can then weight each commodity's RPC by households' expenditures on that commodity. 3. % County residents who rent IMPLAN does not have internal estimates of this, so we recommend that you consult available public data sources. 4. Average annual county rent IMPLAN does not have internal estimates of this, so we recommend that you consult available public data sources. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!
