anomalous output results for RI sector 20
I'm running a 50 state contribution analysis of benefit payments to households, using Institution Spending Pattern "Households 35-50k", with the 2012 state total package. Rhode Island is showing some very odd results: huge negative direct impact value added in proportion to the dollar value of the activity I input-- about negative $400M vs about $1.1 B in payments. Based on the detailed results, looks like the culprit is Sector 20, oil and natural gas extraction, which shows $1.2B total negative value added . This shows up whether I run RI as a single region, or in an MRIO with neighboring states.
I’m about halfway through running all the states, and haven’t come across anything like this in the others. Can someone explain this to me? Is this a glitch?

Hello Nari, The 2012 RI model OPTI is massively negative in Sector 20. Perhaps this is the culprit. You can change this by editing the underlying Study Area Data via the Customize> Study Area Data screen. Under the Study Area Data screen you will select Sector 20 from the left-hand menu and then zero out the value for Other Property Type Income. However, because the software will need to balance out that industry and Other Property Type Income is typically a balancing field you will need to distribute that negative value elsewhere. There are basically three ways this can be done. 1) you could put the profit totally into proprietor income (add opi and pi together. 2) let intermediate change. 3) Change Output by the same amount of the change in Other Property Type Income. Eg, if increasing OPI by 2 million (from -2 to 0) then increase output by 2 million. -
Thanks for the response. I think it makes the most sense to let the intermediate expenditures adjust, otherwise I'd end up with disproportionately large profits/output etc. However, when I zero out the Other Property Type Income field and click the "update" button and save, the following happens: the Analyze options, and the Explore and Customize options (except for Study Area Data) on the left hand toolbar all become grayed out, and I can't run the scenario. Also, is there supposed to be a save button? I don't see it anywhere on the screen and there's no scrollbar for that window. I've had issues with IMPLAN on some computers where there's a window sizing problem and I can't get to the bottom of the window. So the only way for me to save is to click on another industry so that I get a popup asking if I want to save.
