Tax on Production and Imports: Sales Tax

I recently ran a model using county data in a state that does not have a general sales tax; however, the state and local tax report includes an amount for sales tax. Based on the definition in the glossary, I assume that this would probably represent taxes such as hotel tax, etc.? Please confirm. Thanks!

  • Hi Debbie! Thank you for your post. Unfortunately, we do not have county level tax receipts data; thus, county-level TOPI (Taxes On Production and Imports) is based on state TOPI-to-Employment ratio. So indeed - if the state has it, the county will have it. Sales tax does include motel/hotel taxes, as shown on page 4-12 of the attached document.
