County model, are impacts just within the county?

I have run several county models looking at the impact of out-of-state traveler spending within a county, and was recently asked whether the direct, indirect and induced impacts reflect impacts just within the county, or whether they reflect impacts to a larger area (such as the whole state). I should know the answer to this, but can't quite get it straight in my head! So, for instance, if $10 million was spent in County A, are the direct employment impacts all within County A? What about indirect and induced? We need to know whether it's accurate to say A) that $10 million spent within County A directly supports 2000 jobs and indirectly supports 500 jobs within County A; B) $10 million spent in County A directly supports 2000 jobs within County A and indirectly supports 500 jobs in the state; or C) $10 million spent in County A supports 2500 jobs within the state. Thank you!

  • Hi Kara, Thank you for your post. The answer is A! The impacts of your analysis are confined to the regions you are using when you build your model. If you are building your model on county level data, then your impact results are county level only. The value(s) that you enter when you are setting up your Event, are the Direct Impacts. The study region you built your model on should be where the Direct impact is occurring. However, if you were to build your model using the Multi Regional Input/Output (MRIO) method you could see how your impact in County A affects the rest of the State and visa versa.
