Defense related employment
Question: How can I estimate employment in the defense industry?
Answer: It will require some effort. Go to the Federal Procurement Data Center website and download the data for all Federal contracts that are 1) originated by Department of Defense and 2) is production in your county (not contracting office but site of production).
You can use the output per worker for the IMPLAN sector based on the NAICs code of the contract product to derive employment. (this won't get you the classified - black budget - contracts)
In IMPLAN look at the payments by institution 11002 Federal Defense to sectors 439, 440 (2007 data) and use the output per worker for 439 and 440 to calculate employees working directly for the Dept of Defense.
