In version 3, margins can be applied on an industry basis. If you want commodity basis you have to the activity type you are using as "commodity change". By default, when you install the software you only have access to the "industry change" activity type. To open up more options you would select the options under File:User Preferences. The user interface and other features of V3 can be found in the Knowledge Base under support on the website.

When you specify a retail sector and give it a value the software should automatically ask if this is a gross salesor a gross margin. There are no underlying margins to edit for a retail sector. If you specify, gross sales and want to see the margin applied, hit the "Preview" button in the upper right corner to see what will be applied to the multiplier (note this will be a deflated value if the event year is something other than the base data year).

In version 3, margins can be applied on an industry basis. --> I've been able to margin events when they are created under an Industry Change activity type. But when I import an industry spending pattern activity type, select a retail sector event, go to "Event Options", "Edit Event Properties," the Margins option remains grayed out. Is there a way to margin retail sectors in this situation? If you want commodity basis you have to the activity type you are using as "commodity change". By default, when you install the software you only have access to the "industry change" activity type. To open up more options you would select the options under File:User Preferences. --> Yes, we've opened up all the options under the User Preferences. So we can create events under a Commodity Change activity type. But there doesn't seem to be a way to import a commodity-basis spending pattern the way you could in IMPLAN 2. Is this accurate?

For the retail margins, even though you say "yes" to gross margins, you have to say "yes" to margins in event options. The "edit margins" should then become available.

To import both commodity basis and industry basis events, you will need to separate the two and put industry basis events in the "Industry Change" spreadsheet and commodity basis events in the "Commodoty change" Spreadsheet (appliance:\implan user data\templates\activity template.xls). You may run both activities in a single scenario.
