Local Industry Spending: Check on methodology

I have an industry that has data on their local county spending (they actually quantified all spending done within the county). Process:1. Setup Activities>Activity Options>Import>Industry Spending Pattern. 2. Events>New Events>Event Options>Change All (change all years to year of data). 3. Analyze Scenarios> set scenario level to a dollar amount that will give you the direct output dollar amount that matches the local spending by the industry being modeled. Sound?

  • So they tell you what they spent their money on, but rather total bought from local suppliers? I think what I would do is: Step 1) as you lay out Step 2) Not necessary as they are coefficients - sum to 1.0. Theoretically there may be a relative shift based on relative differences in deflators. Step 3) Same as what you have Step 4) There will be imports of your "local" spending, so the direct effect will not be the right total. So, this step is to adjust the Scenario level upward to give the right direct effect (should be able to ratio it based on the first run.

  • You will need to deflate your total spent locally. I think I would use the GDP deflater as it is a mix of goods. You will need to calculate it externally based on the GDP index.
