Tax on Production & Imports

Please provide a definition of the types of taxes that are included in "tax on production and imports." For example, local and state property taxes and state corporate income/excise taxes would not be included here, is that right? It would seem to include sales taxes, certain permit and highway user fees, import taxes, excise taxes, etc. What other common taxes would be included? Thank you.

  • The category is tax on Production and Imports. If this has nothing to do with imported factors of production or inventories (as suggested by the moderator's response) it seems to be a very misleading title for a category - or does it? I am interested in doing some import substitution analyses. Where do I go to find or what do I do to 'accurately' impute imports? Thank you.

  • Hello Joel, The whole title is "Taxes on production and imports net of government subsidies" and it is taken directly from the BEA's label. We agree that it is a very poor indicator of imports to the industry. The Explore> Social Accounts> Social Account Reports Tab with the View By: Commodity Trade tab will show you the values of imports for each commodity in the region. As regards modeling import substitution, you can look at the value of imports to the region for a given commodity and model that as an Industry Change Activity with the Industry Sales value set to the value of imported production you would like to examine. This will allow you to determine the impact of providing that increased production locally. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. IMPLAN Support Team
