personal consumption expenditures

Hello, I have run 28 different models on 28 companies which have located in our economic development's region. I have calculated the impact of the new jobs created. However, I would like to figure out the earnings' impact. Can please tell me how I find the personal consumption expenditures? Thank you, Laura

  • Hi Laura, When you run an Industry Change analysis, the spending of the Labor Income dollars for the Direct and Indirect Employment will be what drives the Induced impact. So you will have already captured the impact of those earnings in your region. In regards to your question, are you trying to isolate just the proportion that is the Direct impact of labor spending? Are you trying to view how the labor spending is run through the model? Trying to view what Households purchase? Any additional detail you can provide will help us to better assist you. Thanks!

  • Hi Laura Haynes. We assume that you are wanting to view what households purchase in a study region in IMPLAN. If that is the case, then you can review the actual Household purchases by navigating to Explore> Study Area Data> View By: Household Commodity Demand. Since households purchase a majority of their non-service commodities (i.e., physical goods) from retail outlets, you can pretty much ignore all of the manufacturing sectors and focus solely on the retail sectors (320-330) and service sectors (>331-422). Please let us know if you we can provide additional help.

  • Hello, In order to run the JEDI model with County data, I aggregated the 440 industries in IMPLAN into the 14 industries in the JEDI model to get the multipliers and the Personal Consumption Expenditure using the Options>Aggregation screen in the IMPLAN program. I have a couple of questions: 1. Do you know if the Labor Income multipliers in IMPLAN correspond to the Earnings multipliers required in the JEDI model? 2. Where in the IMPLAN program can I find (or how do I calculate) the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) for the 14 industries I aggregated for the JEDI model? I need to export the PCE values for the County to enter them into the "User Add-in Location" sheet of the JEDI program. Thank you, Rafael

  • Hi Rafael. To ensure that the full impacts of spending in your Industries are captured, Labor Income and direct effects will need to be figured and added to the total impacts. One way to estimate direct effects, if they are not known is to use similar Industries that exists in IMPLAN as proxies of the direct impacts. An important thing to note is that Industry Spending Patterns typically do not include labor income expenditures, and therefore the coefficients sum to less than 1.00. We want you to know that the LI values in IMPLAN are loaded payroll, so you will want to make sure that that is what JEDI is expecting as well. While JEDI may require some of our data, NREL has never provided us with any specs about the software; so we know very little about its requirements. You can imported a household spending pattern in IMPLAN by navigating to Setup Activities>Activity Options>Import>Institution Spending Pattern and then select the household spending pattern you want. The Activity Level can then be used to specify the particular output level being analyzed. To do this, you would navigate to Setup Activities>Edit Activities>Activity Level and enter the amount of your budget. As far as the Earnings Multiplier, we believe that the Labor Income Multiplier would be the one you would want to use because it incorporates both Employee Compensation and Proprietor Income, but we would recommend verifying this with NREL.
