Calculate the Income per HH

Hi, I am using the 2012 implan data for New York County to calculate the income per household in 2012. I obtained the total income for each household group in the IxC Social Accounting Matrix. Then, I obtained the number of HH in each group from Study Area Data > Area Demographics. I divided the total income by the number of HH in each HH group to get the income per household in 2012. However, the number I got did not fall into the income ranges (<10K, 10-15K, etc). What is the problem with this? Please see attachment for my calculation. Thank you!

  • Hello Yang. We calculated the 2012 NY model Household Income per household group and the results are attached in an Excel Spreadsheet. Where did you take your estimates of Household expenditures or which tables did you use to calculate the state spending per household income group? Below is a brief description and paths to the data used to derive the attached estimates. 1) Obtained the amount spent/demand (which is commodity expenditures by HH income category) by household income breakdown by navigating to: Explorer> Social Accounts> View by> Household Commodity Demand 2) Obtained the number of households by income breakdown by navigating to: Explorer> Study Area Data> Industrial Detail> Area Demographics To obtain the average household income by income breakdown, we divide the data in Step #2 by the data in Step # 1 for each household breakdown. Aside from your estimates of household income, we noticed that you used population instead of the number of households in each group to derive your estimates. Also, your population figures are extremely small. They sum to 841,439 people. New York State has more than 19.5 million people according to the latest population estimates. There is something wrong with where you are pulling your data. Our data does not match your data for the 2012 NY State Model. We hope this help. Please let us know if we be of further help to you.

  • Thank you very much for replying. Did you upload the excel file? Because I dont see it... I am actually doing the analysis on New York County(Manhattan) instead of New York State. I did the calculation according to your procedure, but still the numbers do not fall into the ranges. Please see attachment for my excel. Thank you.

  • So the income per HH does not necessarily fall into the ranges LT10k, 10-15k, etc.?

  • Because in the excel you provided, the income per HH for Households LT10k is 30,415. Shouldn't this number be less than 10k, since it's for HH LT10k?

  • Hi Yang. Two things are happening that are causing the results you see, which would be true if you were computing household income by category in any state using IMPLAN data. 1) The household income categories are based on money income categories in the Census CES (consumer expenditure survey). Personal income comes from REA total personal income estimates which include more than money - in particular Owner occupied housing income (an imputed estimate of income you receive because you own rather than rent a house) and a 100% adjusted increase in proprietor income (because IRS studies show that reported proprietor income is half of actual income). 2) The Low income households are dominated by proprietors that have lost money - but draw from savings (and unreported income) to spend far more than they earn, thus causing their household spending to be much higher. I hope this explains your question.
