Hello, I am currently trying to measure the impact of operational sales of a retail store that finished construction. So far, I have total Square Feet of the retail space, type of retailer, Annual Net Sales/Square Foot. Would my activity/event be: Industry Change > select appropriate type of industry > Industry sales value = Annual Net Sales/Square Feet * Total square feet of the building? Furthermore, it appears this particular retailer generates sales through wholesale as well. If I can separate retail sales from retail margin, would I run two separate events under the activity; one event with the retail sales value and the other selecting gross retail margin? Lastly, annual net sales seems to be the only sales data I can find on this particular retailer. Does that conflict with IMPLAN's Gross Retail Sales option? Thanks! Tymon

  • Hi Tymon, Thank you for your post. The type of analysis you would do is an Industry Change for the Operational impact of your new retail store. To do an Industry Change you will need to have one of the following inputs: Gross Industry Sales/Output, Employment, Employee Compensation or Proprietor Income. You have the value you need as Gross Sales and you would want to use the Gross Sales option, and you are correct that your value of Gross Sales would be would be based on your calculation of cost per sq. ft. by the size of the retail space. As for the wholesale aspect, unless you can split the portion of the sales that are whole from retail, and thus distribute them to Sector 319, there is no way without being able to split the sales on a commodity basis (i.e. $10K of teddy bears and $85k of women's dresses) to be able to Model the difference in their wholesale and retail sales. In the end the retail sales Margin may be a closer representation, as regards the spending pattern since the wholesale Sector is a generic wholesaler for all commodities. The following article will also help you with margining your retail sector and understanding the difference between Gross Retail Sales and Gross Retail Margin: http://implan.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&layout=edit&id=161 Thanks!
