Hi, I want to include bioenergy produced by forestry sector in my analysis. Is there any way I could do this using only the IMPLAN database? Unmesh

  • Hello Unmesh, Just to clarify, when you say you are interested in bioenergy produced by the forestry Sector are you asking about modeling the impacts of forestry byproducts being used as biomass to produce energy? In addition, it appears you are using 2012 data is that correct?

  • Yes. Both of those things you mentioned are correct. Unmesh

  • HI. IMPLAN is only designed to look at backward linkages, because these relationships are much clearer to define, so you can certainly look at the forestry Sector and see what is required for it to produce a certain value of production, although the input structure would assume all forestry products unless you edit the underlying spending pattern to reflect just the requirements of biomass production. Forward linkages examine how a company's products are used. This is much harder to determine. Will the forestry production of biomass be sold to biomass energy or some other Industry? Is the plant in your region or in another region? If you can answer these types of questions you can estimate the impacts of forward linkages by starting from biomass energy Sector and an estimate of how much it's sales increase as a result of local biomass production. This is a somewhat complicated procedure since, you will need to use the Analysis-by-Parts methodology to do this type of analysis to avoid double-counting. If you have an estimate value for the increase in biomass energy production, please let us know and we can provide detailed instructions on how to remove the forestry Sector from the spending pattern so that you can control it's sales and avoid double-counting the forestry impact. Thanks!
