Industry not existing in the region

Hi. There are industries not existing in Washington State, such as tobacco and cotton (Sectors 7 and 8 respectively). However, when I checked the Trade Flows for tobacco farming: Customize>Trade Flows>Industry/Institution RPC>Tobacco – The table shows two sectors: Tobacco product manufacturing (Sector 111) and Scientific research and development services (Sector 456). The tobacco farming RPC is 0.029451. Does this mean that about 2.95% of the demand by Sector 111 and Sector 456 are met by local tobacco farmers? If so, why is there an RPC for tobacco farming if it is a non-existing industry in Washington State? If I am misunderstanding something, could you please provide a clarification? Thank you.

  • Hi Suzette, Great question. The RPC is on a commodity basis so if there are any Industries (Sectors in IMPLAN) or Institutions (government, inventory and households) that produce tobacco you will see an RPC in this case it is Federal Government Non-Defense that is producing the tobacco in the state. You can view this by going to Explore> Social Accounts> Balance Sheet (Tab), and select View By: Commodity Balance Sheet and the Industry-Institution Production tab. Please let me know if this addresses your concern or if you have any additional questions.
