Splitting sectors
There are 536 sectors in IMPLAN now. However, sometimes more detail is desired. For example, in 2012 IMPLAN sector 300 included both NAICS 337211 and NAICS 337214. In focusing on the forest products industry from a descriptive statistics standpoint, I am only interested in NAICS 337211-Wood Office Furniture Manufacturing. In 2013 IMPLAN datasets, these sectors have been split (373 and 375) making it easier to define the forest products industries. However, there are three other sectors that include both wood or forest based components and non-wood/non-forest components. The magnitude of forest products industries would be exaggerated if I included these entire sectors, and it would be understated if they were excluded. If you have any suggestions for splitting these to highlight the forest/wood component, please direct me to a paper or suggest possible approaches.
The sectors are:
Sector 19-Support activities for agriculture and forestry (NAICS 115 vs NAICS 1153). I am interested in deriving employment, output, labor income and VA for this forest-based split sector. Note: 6.3% of the sector 115 jobs are associated with 1153 in 2013 (BLS).
Sector 372-Institutional furniture manufacturing (NAICS 337127). There are wood-based and non-wood-based sectors in NAICS 3371, but this one has no more detailed data that I have seen. I am interested in deriving employment, output, labor income and VA for this wood-based split sector.
Sector 376-Showcase, partition, shelving and locker manufacturing (NAICS 337215). There are wood-based and non-wood-based sectors in NAICS 3372, but this one has no more detailed data that I have seen. I am interested in deriving employment, output, labor income and VA for this wood-based split sector.
I look forward to your thoughts on this!

Hey Larry, Unfortunately we aren't going to have much additional help to offer here especially since the majority of the splits you are looking to do are within a single NAICS code. But we do have a few thoughts. For Sector 19, since you have a NAICS split and the BLS data you can certainly use this data to split the Study Area Data Sector. For the remaining Sectors, to try to determine how much of the Study Area Data is driven by wood products our best thought is to use the split between upholstered (337121) vs. wood (337122) vs. metal (337124) vs. other (337125) household furniture as a proxy for the same split for institutional furniture. Similarly, you could use the split between wood (337211) + custom wood (337212) vs. non-wood (337214) as a proxy for the same split for 337215. This would definitely be a very rudimentary split but possibly better than nothing. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. IMPLAN Support Team
