Definition of "induced" impacts

HI all Quick question. When my inputted event consists of new households and their income, only INDUCED impacts -- for example, new health care employment, income etc. -- are the result. I get that part. But are these induced impacts limited to the spending caused ONLY by these new households (say, at the doctors' office), or does the induced impact result also include the spending the cycles through? -- i.e. where new households' spending at doctors' offices leads to new employment at the doctors' office, which then creates ADDITIONAL household income and spending (induced) impacts -- are these additional impacts included in the model's result? Any and all answers appreciated! Richard Paik

  • Hello Richard, You are on the right track with your second example. The Induced Impact results include the additional cycles of impacts to your study region. Regards, IMPLAN Staff

  • Thank you very much. One quick followup: Is it possible to figure out how much of the "induced" impact is the spending by the new households as opposed to the new cycles of spending that result? I'm guessing that most of the impact is the initial spending, but I wonder if I can take one more step on this. Thanks again!

  • Hi Richard! From your previous forum post, it sounds as if you are using the Household Spending Pattern Activity type. If this is the case, the first-round of Intermediate Expenditures as the Direct Effects of the spending pattern. When you enter your initial value for the Household Spending Pattern, this should not include taxes or savings:http://implan.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=214 The Household Spending Pattern, because of a definitional change from income spending to Institution spending, will report the first-round of Intermediate Expenditures as the Direct Effects of the spending pattern. I hope that this helps! Thanks. IMPLAN Staff
