Modeling Public Transit

Hi,

It is my understanding that IMPLAN has two ways to model public transit: 529 - State Government Passenger Transit and 532 - Local Government Passenger Transit.  We are interested in knowing the impact of investment in 1.) increased the frequency at which public transit operates, and 2.) understanding the impact of extending rail networks and bus networks.

Is there any way to parse out the impact of each of these? For example, is there a way to determine the impact of extending bus public transit in a city? How about the frequency of bus stops?

    Luke - 

    These are great questions! In order to model them in IMPLAN, you will need to come up with an associated value for a bus line extension or additional bus stop.There is no way to determine the cost of either of these services in IMPLAN.

    From your reply, even if we knew that $1 M would be invested into a rail line extensions, we would model that as either 529 or 532? In other words, that is the most granular level?

    I read the article, but I am still confused about what these categories include. Since they don't directly capture construction of new public transportation, can I assume they capture ongoing operations?

    So if we knew that $1M would be spent on rail extensions, we would model that as Industry 56?  Would we then have to adjust 529 because the transit system needs more staff? Perhaps I am misunderstanding.

    Luke - 

    These Industries represent the yearly operations of transit. If you are modeling construction, that would not fall under the operations, and would fall under Industry 56 - Construction of other new nonresidential structures. If the extension now requires more staff to operate, you can absolutely model that through the transit Industry.
