Data Center Construction Impacts

I am modeling the economic impact of new data center construction and am unsure of what IMPLAN industry code to utilize. I viewed the below link and determined that either code "55", "56" or "51" might work.

I understand that IMPLAN's codes are limited by the Census coding system, but has anyone had a similar experience I can leverage? I additionally found this below link, which indicates you can modify the production function for IMPLAN, but I don't understand how to do that using the online app.

  • Hi Lee,

I would actually suggest using Industry 55 Construction of new commercial structures to model the construction of the facility. If you follow the link in our data support document it will take you to the US Census Bureau's definitions. https://www.census.gov/construction/c30/definitions.html

It appears that a data center would fall in the "Office" classification, under "General", which reads as:

    General
Includes administration buildings, computer centers, office buildings, and professional buildings.

If you are also interested in modeling the operations of the data center, then yes you can modify that Industry's production function in the Region Details screen or modify that individual business' Spending Pattern using an Industry Impact Analysis (IIA) Event Type.

    Hope that helps!
