INTRODUCTION:
IMPLAN now allows users to upload any Event type using the Event template. Event templates can be used to create Events outside of IMPLAN for import into the system. The sheet has one tab for each Event Type, and the correct tab must be used in order for importing to be successful.
The Event Template is a very specific file, and each field must be filled out as it is shown in the original template. For example, where the template shows "100%" do not enter "100" (without the %).
If IMPLAN detects any errors in the uploaded template, it will display an appropriate warning message on the Import Event Template window indicating whether a specific Event can be imported without modifications.
At this time, IMPLAN recommends limiting your imports to 250 Events. Also, do not include an Event Value with a zero or a cell containing a formula as this causes an error and won't let you upload the template.
If you are using the Template to upload Events and also manually entering an Event, it is recommended to upload the Template first. Uploading a Template into IMPLAN may cause manually entered Tags to be erased from the project.
CREATING A NEW EVENT TEMPLATE:
STEP 1 – DOWNLOAD THE BLANK EVENT TEMPLATE
- Download Event Template
- Select the tab(s) with the Type of Event(s) you’d like to import
- Industry Output, Employment, Employee Compensation, and Proprietor Income Events can be entered in the ‘Industry’ tab
- Commodity Output Events can be entered in the ‘Commodity’ tab
- Labor Income Events can be entered in the ‘Labor Income’ tab
- Household Income Events can be entered in the ‘Household Income’ tab
- Industry Spending Pattern Events can be entered in the ‘Industry Spending Pattern’ tab
- Institution Spending Pattern Events can be entered in the ‘Institution Spending Pattern’ tab
- Industry Contribution Analysis Events can be entered in the ‘Industry Contribution Analysis’ tab
- Populate the selected tab(s) with the Event Input Values you’d like to use. For information that you do not have, leave the values (cells) blank. Uploading the Event Template with the following info we would get a single Industry Output Event named "Event Template Article - Industry Event" in Industry 1, with an Output of $1M, and an Event Tag named "Wassily":
- Save the populated Template in a place and by a name that will be easy for you to find and identify later.
STEP 2 – IMPORT THE COMPLETED EVENT TEMPLATE
- Navigate back to the Impact Screen of IMPLAN
- Click the Advanced Options icon at the top of the page next to “SAVE”
- Click “Upload Template”
- Click “Choose file”
- Find your saved file
- Open your file
- Check the checkbox next to the Event Type(s) you’d like to import
- Click “Save”
- Your Event(s) will now be populated in the Impacts Screen
- Events will need to be dragged and dropped into the appropriate Groups - the import process will not automatically match Events to Groups, and therefore the import process will not assign any “Dollar Year” to the Events - this step must be done manually
MARGINNING
Margins can be applied in the case of Industry and Commodity Events, where applicable. If you’d like margins to be applied to you Industry Event, populate the “Margins” column of the Template by using the dropdown menu to select “Producer” or “Purchaser.” Remember, not all Industries and Commodities are marginable. The only marginable Industries are Retail and Wholesale Industries. IMPLAN has adjusted the best practices of modeling Commodity purchases with margins rather than Industry purchases. The only exception is for wholesale and retail Industries which maintain their marginable status. Now, when the item purchased is known, a Commodity Output Event should be modeled using the purchased item as the Specification and Margins can be applied if appropriate. Commodities that can be purchased from a retailer are the marginable Commodities. Find current margins in the article Margins & Deflators. Note that currently, if you want your Commodity Events to be set to "Purchaser", leave the margin column blank.
EVENT TYPE
The Event Template contains directions in an orange box on each tab. The following details directions and what values should be entered in each cell.
INDUSTRY
Event Name: This field is required. You must enter a unique name for each Event in your project. The template will fail to upload if you enter the same Event Name throughout multiple tabs.
Industry: This field is required. Your Sector value should be 1-546 for data years 2018 and forward.
Output: This field is optional.* If you know the Output associated with your impact, you will want to enter it in this field. If you leave this field blank, IMPLAN will estimate it based on one of the entered values for Employee Compensation, Proprietor Income, or Employment.
Employment: This field is optional.* If you know the Employment associated with your impact, you will want to enter it in this field. If you leave this field blank, IMPLAN will estimate the Employment value based on Output per Worker values for the selected Industry.
Employee Compensation: This field is optional.* If you know the value of Employment Compensation paid in your Event, you will enter that value here. If you leave this field blank, IMPLAN will estimate the Employment Compensation value based on Employee Compensation per Worker values for the selected Industry.
Proprietor Income: This field is optional.* If you know the value of Proprietor Income paid in your Event, you will enter that value here. If you know that no Proprietor Income is paid by your Event, enter "0" here. If you leave this field blank, IMPLAN will estimate the Proprietor Income value based on Proprietor Income per Worker values for the selected Industry.
While each of these four fields is optional, at least one of them (Output, Employment, Employment Compensation, or Proprietor Income) will require an entered value. IMPLAN will estimate the value of the remaining fields based on the value you enter into the template. If two or more fields contain information, IMPLAN will estimate the remaining values based on the entered Event Value. If a zero is entered, IMPLAN will treat that value as a zero and no associated impacts for that field will be calculated.
Margins: This field indicates to IMPLAN whether or not Margins should be applied to the Event value. Remember, only a retail or wholesale Industry can be margined. You must select “Purchaser” or “Producer” price for each retail or wholesale Industry Event in the template. If you leave it blank, IMPLAN will default to Purchaser Price.
Event Tag: This field is optional. This field applies a tag you would like associated with the event. If you would like more than one tag per event, you must enter multiple tags separated by a comma (,) or pipe (|) character. Do not leave a space before or after the tag name. You can use up to 16 tags in a single project.
COMMODITY OUTPUT
Event Name: This field is required. You must enter a unique name for each Event in your project. The template will fail to upload if you enter the same Event Name throughout multiple tabs.

Only Commodities that can be sold via a retailer or wholesaler can be margined in a Commodity Event. Select “Producer” price for each Commodity Event in the template if you know the value is the price received by the producer for goods and services that are sold. Setting margins to "Purchaser" means the value is the price paid by Industries and final users. If you leave it blank, IMPLAN will default margins to Purchaser Price. Note that there is a tab within the Event Template titled "Marginable Commodities". This tab incudes' a list of all of the Commodities in IMPLAN that can be sold via a wholesale or retail Industry, and thus could have margins selected where applicable.
Local Purchase Percentage: This field is required. You must enter a value between 0-100%, this tells the software what portion of the line item Commodity was purchased locally and therefore affects the local Region. If you would like us to look this up in the model’s Social Accounting Matrix, enter SAM. When LPP is set to SAM, LPP will be set to the Regional Purchasing Coefficient (RPC) for the given Commodity and Region. Leaving this value blank will by default set LPP to 100%.
Event Tag: This field is optional. This field applies a tag you would like associated with the event. If you would like more than one tag per event, you must enter multiple tags separated by a comma (,) or pipe (|) character. Do not leave a space before or after the tag name.
