Easy Contribution Results in IMPLAN

INTRODUCTION

Diving into IMPLAN doesn’t have to feel like strapping into a rocketship headed straight into an economic galaxy far, far away. In fact, getting results can be surprisingly easy (and even a-maize-ingly fun) once you know where to click, drag, how to use the AI, and let IMPLAN do the hard work for you.

Think of this guide as your friendly tour buddy, here to show you the shortcuts, the hidden gems, and all the nifty features that make IMPLAN feel less like a spreadsheet fortress and more like a powerful tool at your fingertips. So get ready because we’re about to make economic analysis pop like fresh kernels on a hot skillet.

We're going to start with your IMPLAN Dashboard, it's where you'll end up when you login.

LET AI DO THE HARD PART

Getting results in IMPLAN can be a smooth and efficient process once you understand the workflow from setup to analysis. The first step is to ensure that the platform’s AI features are enabled. To do this, click on your profile icon in the upper‑right corner of the IMPLAN interface, open your profile settings, and toggle on the AI options.

RUNNING A CONTRIBUTION ANALYSIS

Setup

With these features activated, return to the dashboard, where you will begin your project on the Regions page. From here, you can select your geographic area either by clicking directly on the map or by typing the name of a state, county, or metropolitan area into the search bar. Once you’ve identified your region, add it to your impacts so the system knows where your analysis will take place.

After selecting your region, your next step is to name your project and save it. This keeps your work organized and ensures that each analysis is easy to track and revisit.

With your project created, move to the Impacts page, where you will set up an event for your analysis. In this example, we will run an Industry Contribution Analysis. Start by giving the event a descriptive name, then select “Industry Contribution Analysis” as the event type, followed by the specific industry you want to evaluate. If, for example, you are studying grain farming, you would choose that industry and then input either a total value for the industry or a percentage of it, depending on whether you want to analyze the full industry or a portion of it. You can then drag and drop your event into the appropriate region group and run the analysis, allowing IMPLAN to process the economic effects.

Viewing Results

Once the analysis finishes, you can view your results through IMPLAN’s summary screen. This page displays the most commonly used tables, including economic indicators and tax results. These tables break down employment, labor income, value added, and output across direct, indirect, induced, and total effects, giving you a detailed look at the economic contributions associated with your scenario. Many users find it helpful to round values or convert figures to millions for cleaner reporting.

For an even more streamlined view, the Simplified Overview tab presents high‑level results in an easy‑to‑digest card format. This overview can also be exported as a PowerPoint file, which makes it simple to adjust branding or integrate into a presentation.

IMPLAN’s AI Summary feature offers another powerful way to interpret your results. Located under the Summary tab, this tool allows you to generate tailored narratives about your project. You can prompt the AI to break down specific topics such as job impact, tax effects, or comparisons across regions, or even request custom tones or audiences such as state legislators or industry stakeholders. This feature transforms detailed data into polished, reader‑friendly explanations, which is especially useful when preparing reports or communicating findings to non‑technical audiences.

You can give the AI prompts to tailor the results like “Tailor it for state legislators.”

You can even have fun like “Make it about how Ohio is better than Michigan.”

The Map

If your project involves multiple regions, the Map tab provides a visual way to explore economic ripple effects. You can add additional states to your analysis and use tagging options to highlight specific areas or industries. The map’s colors are customizable so you can align visuals with your branding or preferences. Additionally, IMPLAN allows you to copy embed code for the map, enabling you to place dynamic visuals directly on your website or in digital reports.

Adding Forward Linkages

IMPLAN also includes tools for understanding forward linkages, which illustrate how the outputs of one industry support downstream sectors. This supply‑driven approach complements traditional backward‑linkage (input‑driven) analyses and can be especially useful when evaluating how goods such as corn flow into industries like food manufacturing, transportation, and biofuel production. Check out Forward Thinking: A New Dimension in Impact Analysis for details on how this works.

Setting up a forward‑linkage analysis involves an easy narrated walk through using the guide on the dashboard. Following the prompts, just select a region and industry, enter the share of production to evaluate, choose the appropriate dollar year, name the project, and run the analysis.

The resulting summary report mirrors the structure of contribution analyses and includes access to the AI Summary, map features, and other interpretive tools.

CONCLUSION

By the time you reach the end of your IMPLAN adventure, you’ll practically feel like an economic wizard, less the robe and staff, unless that’s your thing. From turning on AI to exploring maps and generating polished summaries, each step is designed to take you from “Wait… how do I do this?” to “Well shucks boss, look what I did!” Now that you’ve mastered the workflow, go forth and create the dazzling, data‑driven results you were destined to harvest. And remember: if all else fails, there’s always AI to lend a helping hand. But if that doesn’t get your crop growing, your friendly neighborhood CSM at support@implan.com is always ready to help.
