Household Income Events in IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global

Learn how Household Income Events work in IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global, where you choose between Households and NPISH specifications.

Household Income Events model a change in income received by households, separate from any change in Industry production or payroll. Examples include a government rebate, a tax refund, or a grant paid to non-profit organizations. In IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global, a Household Income Event has two specifications to choose from: Households and NPISH (Non-Profit Institutions Serving Households). This article explains both and walks through an example. For the U.S. version, which uses nine household income groups, see Household Income Events.

Event Type Household Income Events
Event Use Analyzing a change in income received by households or NPISH, separately from production
Event Specification 10001 - Households, 10002 - NPISH
Event Value Total new income received by the specified institution

HOW ARE HOUSEHOLD INCOME EVENTS DIFFERENT OUTSIDE THE U.S.?

The event mechanics work the same way in every geography: you enter the new income, and IMPLAN applies it to a spending pattern. However, there are two important differences in IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global to keep in mind:

Difference IMPLAN U.S. IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global
Household groups Nine household groups by income (HH LT15K to HH GT200K), each with its own spending pattern One household group (10001 - Households), representing all personal consumption expenditures
NPISH Included in household spending; not a separate specification A separate specification (10002 - NPISH) with its own spending pattern for final use

The single household group reflects data limitations: national statistics for Canada and the other countries in IMPLAN Global do not split household spending by income level.

WHICH SPECIFICATION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Specification Use it when the income goes to Examples
10001 - Households People, who spend it on goods and services for personal use A government rebate or benefit payment, a tax refund, a change in transfer payments
10002 - NPISH Non-profit institutions that provide goods and services to households for free or at economically non-significant prices A grant to community food services, community housing, emergency relief, religious organizations, or sports and recreation clubs

If a change affects both, set up one event for each specification and run them in the same Group.

WHAT IS NPISH?

NPISH are non-profit institutions that provide goods and services to households either for free or at economically non-significant prices. In IMPLAN U.S., their spending on behalf of households is counted within household spending. In IMPLAN Canada and IMPLAN Global, NPISH has its own spending pattern for final use, which is not combined with Households. Spending by NPISH for final use generates Induced Effects, just like household spending.

In IMPLAN Canada, NPISH also appear as Industries, marked "NP" in the Industry description (for example, community food services). The NPISH specification of a Household Income Event models what NPISH spend on behalf of households (final use). To model an NPISH organization's own production and operations, use an Industry Event on its NP Industry instead. Read more in IMPLAN Canada Industry Scheme.

HOW DOES IMPLAN TREAT THE EVENT VALUE?

Enter all new income the households or NPISH will receive. IMPLAN automatically deducts personal taxes and savings from the Event Value and applies the remaining income to the spending pattern of the specification you chose. Spending on goods and services that are imported into the region is treated as leakage and is not counted in the impact results, so the results are often lower than the Event Value.

HOW DO YOU SET UP A HOUSEHOLD INCOME EVENT IN IMPLAN CANADA OR IMPLAN GLOBAL?

Steps at a glance

  1. Build the region — choose a Canada or Global region (e.g., the province of Nova Scotia).
  2. Create an event — give it a unique title and choose Household Income as the Event Type.
  3. Pick the specification — select 10001 - Households or 10002 - NPISH from the Specification dropdown (e.g., 10001 - Households for a rebate paid to residents).
  4. Enter the Event Value — the total new income received (e.g., $5,000,000 CAD).
  5. Add a second event if needed — repeat for the other specification (e.g., NPISH for grants to non-profit organizations).
  6. Assign and run — drag the events into a Group, then click Run.

In this example, a provincial government in Canada announces two measures for Nova Scotia: a $5,000,000 CAD affordability rebate paid to residents, and $750,000 CAD in grants to community non-profit organizations such as food banks and emergency relief services. Because the money goes to two different institutions, we set up two Household Income Events.

First, create a unique Title for each event, then select Household Income for the Event Type. For the first event, click on Specification and select 10001 - Households from the dropdown menu. Enter $5,000,000 as the Value.

For the second event, click on Specification, select 10002 - NPISH and enter $750,000.

Assign both events to the Nova Scotia Group: click the Drag Event icon, hold it, and drop it into the Group. The Multi-Select feature lets you select more than one event at a time. Then click Run in the bottom right of the Impacts screen.

HOW DO YOU ANALYZE THE RESULTS?

When the analysis is finished, click View Results. Results are shown in USD by default; switch the currency to CAD to compare them with the Event Values you entered.

Household Income Events affect only spending by households or NPISH, so the results show only Induced Effects; there are no Direct or Indirect Effects. You may notice in this example that total Induced Output is lower than the $5,750,000 CAD entered. This is because personal taxes, savings and spending on imports leave the regional economy as leakages.

To see the impact of one event on its own, click Filters and search for the event name.
