Summary & Detailed Economic Indicator Results

INTRODUCTION

There are a plethora of Results for each Project that is run in IMPLAN. In addition to the Summary Results, IMPLAN provides more detailed Results Dashboards for various data points. This article will walk users through the Summary and Detailed Economic Indicator Result Dashboards, what is available in each, and considerations for navigating and interpreting these Results. Additionally, the last section of this article discusses some best practices for filtering, sorting, and downloading IMPLAN Project Results.

SUMMARY RESULTS

Impact Results in IMPLAN are typically broken out by Direct Effects, Indirect Effects, and Induced Effects.

Direct Effects are the initial changes that are being modeled within the Project.

Indirect Effects are the Economic Effects stemming from business to business purchases in the supply chain taking place within the Region. While these Indirect Effects will be kicked off by the Directly impacted Industry purchasing Intermediate Inputs, the Indirect Effects will also include the business to business purchases made by the input suppliers, and the Intermediate Input suppliers of those suppliers.

The economic effects stemming from household spending of Labor Income, after removal of taxes, savings, and commuter income are classified as Induced Effects
The Total Effects are simply the sum of the Direct, Indirect, and Induced Effects.

Impact Results Overview

Upon navigating to the Results, the Summary Overview Dashboard is shown. The summary Overview Dashboard has five visualizations: Economic Indicators by Impact, Tax Results, Direct Leakages, Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage, and top 15 Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage. From this Dashboard, users can filter results on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, Event Tag, and Aggregation Scheme.

The Economic Indicators by Impact table shows a summary of the Employment, Labor Income, Value Added, and Output supported as a result of the IMPLAN Project (including all Regions and Events in the displayed Dollar Year). These values are broken out by type of effect, Direct, Indirect, Induced, and Total. This table in particular is useful for calculating the effective Multiplier for each indicator. Remember to never sum these values horizontally, as Labor Income is a component of Value Added, and Value Added is a component of Output.

The Tax Results table shows the level of Direct, Indirect, Induced, and Total Taxes supported by the level of government. Unlike the Economic Indicators table, It is completely fine to sum these Results horizontally, as each level of government is distinct. For example, the County level taxes are not included in the State level tax Results. However, the Total column is the sum of Sub County General, Sub County Special Districts, County, State, and Federal taxes.

Below the Economic Indicators table, is the Direct Leakages table. This will display the Direct Output Leakages from Institutional Commodity Sales, Margins, and Imports to the Region. These represent dollars associated with the Project that do not continue to circulate through the Region’s economy. Direct Leakages are only applicable with certain Event Types. Read more in our support article - Direct Effect Leakages.

At the bottom of the Summary Overview Dashboard is a Top 15 Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage line chart, which displays the Industries that grew by the largest dollar value in Output relative to the Industry Total. The actual growth is displayed in table format within the Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage table. The table includes columns for the Industry Total Output, Impact Output, and Estimated Growth Percentage by Industry rows. Remember, this will be the sum of all Industries impacted across the Direct Output, Indirect Output, and Induced Output.

Economic Indicators

The Economic Indicator Summary Dashboard streamlines the filtering process by displaying the economic indicator Results for each Event, Group/Region, and Impact (Direct, Indirect, and Induced) in the Economic Indicator Summary table. Within this Dashboard, users can filter on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, and Event Tag.

The Economic Indicator Summary Dashboard is particularly helpful for users that have complex analysis types, with large numbers of Events or multiple Regions/Groups, such as a Multi-Regional Input-Output or multi-year Project.

Taxes

The Tax Summary Dashboard is similar to the Economic Indicator Summary Dashboard, displaying the tax Results for each Event, Group/Region, and Impact (Direct, Indirect, and Induced) in the Tax Summary table by level of government. Within this Dashboard, users can filter on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, and Event Tag.

DETAILED ECONOMIC INDICATOR RESULTS

In addition to the summary results, users can explore the detailed economic indicator results by dashboard. These dashboards allow users to view all impacted Industries in the analysis. Use the Dashboard navigation bar to explore Output, Employment, and all components of Value Added.

Output

The Output Dashboard of the Results has four visualizations: Top 15 Output Industries, Industries by Impact, Top 15 Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage, and Industries by Estimated Growth Percentage. From this Dashboard, users can filter on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, Event Tag, and Aggregation Scheme. Any selected filters will apply to all tables and visualizations on the dashboard.

Employment

The Employment Dashboard of the Results has two visualizations: Top 15 Employment Industries and Industries by Impact. From this Dashboard, users can filter on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, Event Tag, and Aggregation Scheme. Any selected filters will apply to all tables and visualizations on the dashboard.

Value Added

The Value Added Dashboard has nine visualizations. There are two visualizations here for each of the four components of Value Added (Employee Compensation, Proprietor Income, Taxes on Production and Imports Net of Subsidies, and Other Property Income), a Top 10 Industries by Impact column chart, and a Industries by Impact table. Each of these visualizations include the Direct, Indirect, Induced and Total Impacts from the IMPLAN Project.

At the bottom of the Dashboard, there is a data table that includes columns for each component of Value Added (as well as a column for the sum of all four, i.e., Total Value Added), broken out by type of Impact and Industry. From this Dashboard, users can filter on Dollar Year, Region, Impact, Group Name, Event Name, Event Tag, and Aggregation Scheme. Any selected filters will apply to all tables and visualizations on the dashboard.

FILTERING, SORTING, AND DOWNLOADING RESULTS

When viewing the Results of any IMPLAN Project, the values in each visualization will be the total Results of all Events in all Regions, with no filters applied (except for Dollar Year)! However, filters can be applied to drill into the Results of a specific Event, or a specific Region. For data tables, sorting gives users the ability to change the row order by any column in the table (to ascending or descending). If a user would like to export the data table or save a visualization, the tile actions icon can be used to download it directly from IMPLAN.

Filters

Remember that the only default filter that will be applied to all tables in the Summary and detailed economic indicator Results will be the Dollar Year. However, users can apply filters to drill into detailed subsets of Results. For example, to display only the Induced Output in the Industries by Impact table, simply filter on Impact, select Induced

Sorting

Result tables can be sorted by any of the columns by clicking on the sort icon within the column.

All data in the table will be sorted in descending order (highest values listed at the top of the table) relative to the column title. To change how the data is sorted, click on another field. When the view has been sorted by a column other than Industry Code, the selected column title will appear with an arrow to its right indicating that the table has been sorted by this column header. Hold down the shift key to sort by multiple columns.

Downloading

Remember, that IMPLAN users can also download an entire Dashboard or individual tables and visualizations. The export function allows data to be exported directly to various file types by clicking the Tile Actions or Dashboard Actions Icon. To download an entire Dashboard, click the Dashboard Actions in the upper right hand corner of the Dashboard, and clicking Download (either as a PDF or CSV file):

Users can also download individual Results tables in multiple formats by clicking on the Tile Actions icon, then clicking Download data.

Note that these downloaded Results tables will always have a default row limit of 5,000 rows. If more than 5,000 rows of data exist, we suggest implementing filters for subsets of the Results (e.g. Direct, Indirect, and Induced) then manually compiling them into a single excel document outside of IMPLAN.
