INTRODUCTION
One of the most popular subsets of IMPLAN Project Results are the tax impacts. While the sum of all types of taxes are displayed on the Summary Overview Dashboard, the Tax Dashboard gives far more detail on the specific line item taxes by level of government. This article will highlight what can be found on the Tax Dashboard, including how to interpret these tax impacts and considerations for filtering and downloading these Results.
OVERVIEW
The Tax Dashboard in the Results of an IMPLAN analysis will include all tax impacts associated with an IMPLAN Project. Within this Dashboard, there is a table for each level of government: Federal Tax Impacts, State Tax Impacts, County Tax Impacts, Sub County Special Districts Tax Impacts (think fire and school districts), and Sub County General Tax Impacts (think city and township). The columns in these tables will reflect where the tax is coming from, and the rows will describe what kind of tax it is. For example, in the Federal Tax Impact table, employee and employer contributions to social insurance taxes (rows) are paid from the Employee Compensation and Proprietor Income columns.
Note that by default, the values displayed here will be for all Industries, Regions/Groups, and Events within an IMPLAN Project across the Direct, Indirect, and Induced Effects. The Total value in each table will match the Total tax value for that level of government in the summary tax table from the Summary Overview Dashboard.
TAX IMPACT DETAILS
The table below clarifies the underlying level of detail of all line items in an IMPLAN tax impact report, across all levels of government. In principle, the tax impact report captures all tax revenue in the study area(s) across all levels of government that exist in that study area for the specific Industries and Institutions affected by an Event or group of Events. The underlying data that support the tax impact report, however, do not embody that much detail.

MISSING DATA
The raw Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances data is missing data for some state- and county-level taxes in some areas. In this data set (and therefore IMPLAN's tax impact reports), the county-level column is distinct from the sub-county columns, in that it is not a sum of the sub-county columns but rather a distinct type of taxes. This means a county can have sub-county types of taxes without having county-type taxes. The same is true for state-level taxes as that category is not a roll-up of county and sub-county taxes, but rather represents state-levied taxes distinct from county-levied, city-levied, and special district-levied taxes. So even if there are taxes levied in an area, they may not show up in the IMPLAN data. In this case, it is recommended to override the direct taxes in IMPLAN with any known values.
FILTERING, SORTING, AND DOWNLOADING RESULTS
When viewing the Results of any IMPLAN Project, the values in each visualization will be the total Results of all Events in all Regions, with no filters applied (except for Dollar Year)! However, filters can be applied to drill into the Results of a specific Event, or a specific Region. For data tables, sorting gives users the ability to change the row order by any column in the table (to ascending or descending). If a user would like to export the data table or save a visualization, the tile actions icon can be used to download it directly from IMPLAN.
Filters
Remember that the only default filter that will be applied to all tables in the Tax Dashboard will be the Dollar Year. However, users can apply filters to drill into detailed subsets of Results. For example, to display only the Induced taxes in the Federal Tax Impact table, simply filter on Impact, and select Induced.
Sorting
Result tables can be sorted by any of the columns by clicking on the sort icon within the column.
All data in the table will be sorted in descending order (highest values listed at the top of the table) relative to the column title. To change how the data is sorted, click on another field. When the view has been sorted by a column other than Description, the selected column title will appear with an arrow to its right indicating that the table has been sorted by this column header. Hold down the shift key to sort by multiple columns.
Downloading
Remember, that IMPLAN users can also download an entire Dashboard or individual tables and visualizations. The export function allows data to be exported directly to various file types by clicking the Tile Actions or Dashboard Actions Icon. To download an entire Dashboard, click the Dashboard Actions in the upper right hand corner of the Dashboard, and clicking Download (either as a PDF or CSV file):
Users can also download individual Results tables in multiple formats by clicking on the Tile Actions icon, then clicking Download data.
