2022 ECONOMIC CENSUS BY ISLAND AREAS
The Economic Census by Island Areas is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau every 5 years. Data elements used by IMPLAN include Establishments, Output, Employee Compensation, Wage and Salary Income, and Wage and Salary Employment, by major industry. Ratios from the Economic Census are applied to current Wage and Salary Employment and Income estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Census of Employment and Wages (CEW) for Puerto Rico to obtain current estimates of Output and Employee Compensation by IMPLAN industry.
2022 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE
Every 5 years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts a Census of Agriculture. In Puerto Rico, the 2022 Census of Agriculture was conducted in accordance with a Cooperative Agreement signed by NASS, the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture, and the University of Puerto Rico Extension Service. The Census of Agriculture data are used in conjunction with BLS CEW data to obtain current estimates of Output, Employee Compensation, Wage and Salary Employment, and Proprietor Employment for the farm sectors.
LATEST BEA BENCHMARK I-O TABLES
Every 5 years, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) releases a comprehensive revision and update to its Benchmark Input-Output (I-O) tables. These tables are a critical component of IMPLAN’s U.S.-based datasets, including Puerto Rico, providing updated industry spending patterns, government spending patterns, investment spending patterns, commodity margins, foreign trade of services, and much more. More details about the BEA Benchmark I-O Tables can be found in the 2023 U.S. Data Release Notes and the BEA Benchmark webinar.
MORE DETAILED BEA CONTROL TOTALS
IMPLAN obtains control totals for the following categories from BEA Table PRGDP1-1. GDP.
- Total Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
- Total Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE)
- Total Exports of Goods
- Total Exports of Services
- Total Federal Government Consumption Expenditures and Gross Investment
- Total State & Local Government Consumption Expenditures and Gross Investment
Starting with the 2023 Puerto Rico data, we now also incorporate additional control totals for more detailed sub-categories of some of these broader totals. Specifically, we now use the values for investment in structures (Private, Federal Government, and State & Local Government) from BEA Table PRGDP4-1-1 Gross domestic investment, which allows us to produce more accurate estimates of the output of the new construction sectors, private investment by commodity, and government investment and consumption by commodity.
