INTRODUCTION
The Employment & Wages by NAICS (Imputed CEW Data) for all counties and states in the U.S. are available going back to 2001. The Census of Employment and Wages (CEW) data found in Data Library is sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) with added imputed values for non-disclosures. Due to the level of detail and historic data available, the Employment & Wages by NAICS data is ideal for running statistical analyses. This Imputed CEW data is useful for completing trend analyses and deep dives into U.S. wage and salary employment and income information. Drilling down into specific Industry data allows for users to more precisely define the Industry they wish to analyze at a granular level.
OVERVIEW
The BLS collects a quarterly count of wage and salary employment and wages across the U.S. called the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). It uses data that is reported by employers covering more than 95% (see related articles section for more details on sector coverage) of jobs across the country. Data is then made available at the county, state, and national levels. The BLS also releases the annual CEW data. The data contains wage and salary employment, wages, and establishments in a given sector and area (down to the county level) and contains this information at the 6-digit NAICS level. This allows for even greater detail in specific modeling scenarios. However, there are certain non-disclosures within their data; IMPLAN adds value by filling in these non-disclosures based on existing data to be able to provide a complete picture. Read more in our support article IMPLAN CEW Data Series.
DASHBOARD
This Dashboard includes 2 tiles:
- Ownership is a column chart stacking the filtered Metric (by default Employment) categorized by Ownership (Federal Government, State Government, Local Government, or Private) over Data Years for the Filtered Region (by default the United States).
- Imputed CEW Table is a table chart showing the filter Metric (by default Employment) by NAICS (by default at the 2-digit NAICS level).
When viewing a Dashboard, use the filters to change the data points displayed. Filter options include:
- Dollar Type: by default dollars are displayed in Real dollars, see Dollar Year.
- Data Year: the most recent Data Year is displayed by default in both tiles
- Dollar Year: by default dollars are shown in current year dollars
- Region Type: United States by default
- NAICS Level: 2 Digit NAICS by default
- Disclosure: no default set, by default disclosed and undisclosed (IMPLAN estimated) data are included
- Ownership: no default set, the Ownership chart displays ownership, and the Imputed CEW Table displays data for all types of ownership by default
- State: no default set. To filter by State, update Region Type to State
- County: no default set. To filter by County update Region Type to County
- Metric: by default Employment
The Dashboard Actions in the upper right provides more options such as downloading the Dashboard to a PDF. On each tile, click the Tile actions (a series of three vertical dots that appear in the upper right of a tile when hovering over it with a cursor) for the option to download the data within that tile. Select Explore from here within the Tile actions to access more data query options. Exploring from the Dashboard allows users to dig into the data starting from the settings within the Dashboard tile.
EXPLORE
Explore the Employment & Wages by NAICS Data by selecting Employment & Wages by NAICS (Imputed CEW Data) from the Explore drop-down menu, or by selecting Explore from here from the Employment & Wages by NAICS (Imputed CEW Data) Dashboard Tile or Look.
By default in Explore, the Dollar Type is Real, the Dollar Year is the current year, and the Data Year is the most recent Data Year. With this setting, all dollar values included in a data query will be adjusted for inflation and displayed in current year dollars. It is recommended to always either filter or pivot on Data Year. Otherwise, data measures will be summed over Data Years. Region Type is by default State. Data queries will include State level tax data with this setting.
FILTER-ONLY FIELDS
DOLLAR TYPE
When Dollar Type is Real, Nominal dollar values are adjusted for inflation/deflation such that each dollar value Measures will be displayed in the selected Dollar Year(s). Dollar Year only applies when Dollar Type is Real.
When Dollar Type is Nominal, dollar value Measures will be unadjusted, therefore they will be displayed in the same Dollar Year as the Data Year.
FIELD PICKER
The Field Picker allows users to pick any one of the Measures from the filter dropdown menu. The Measure titled “Metric” to do so is tied to the Field Picker. Select, filter, and/or pivot on this measure in order to include in data query.
REGION TYPE
View State level taxes by choosing State as the Region Type. Choosing County as the Region level will list County level taxes in the query.
To view state level data, select State in the Tax Region Type filter and select State as a Dimension. To pull county level data, select County in the Region Type filter and select County as a Dimension. Due to the nature of how this data is structured, it is not possible to filter and/or include two different Region Types within a query in the standard way. This can get murky when attempting to see results by County, for a filtered State, which is a common thing to do for all Explores in Data Library.
To view county level data for a specific state, users will have to select County in the Region Type filter and select County as a Dimension. Users will also have to select County as a Filter. Within the County filter, select Contains from the qualifying field dropdown. Now, within the County filter type the name of the state to filter on. This will display data for all counties that exist within the filtered state.
DIMENSIONS
Select a Dimension to include as a column with all Dimension possibilities.
Click Filter on a Dimension to specify which Dimension possibilities appear in the data query.
Click Pivot on a Dimension to transpose the Dimension rows into columns.
